Suprise! Microsoft jumps to windows 10

Forget Windows 9. In an unexpected twist, Microsoft will be going straight to double digits from Windows 8 as it faces a challenging future for its operating system

Originally codenamed Windows Threshold, the new operating system essentially does away with the tiled "Metro" user interface that Microsoft had attempted to implement across its entire device line, from desktop PCs to Surface tablets and Widows Phone devices. It is such a substantial leap, according to Microsoft's executive VP of operating systems, Terry Myerson, that the company decided it would be best to skip over Windows 9, the widely expected name for the next version.

"Windows 10 will run on the broadest amount of devices. A tailored experience for each device," Myerson said at a press event here Tuesday. "There will be one way to write a universal application, one store, one way for apps to be discovered purchased and updated across all of these devices."

Microsoft has spent the better part of two years, since Windows 8's debut in October 2012, responding to criticism over the direction in which it took the operating system that has long dominated traditional PCs. Windows 8 introduced the touch-prioritized Metro design with so-called live tiles and removed key elements of Windows 7, disrupting the familiar look and feel for long-time Windows users. The changes were representative of an overall acceleration of Microsoft's unification of its touch-enabled mobile devices with its desktop and laptop software.

Those changes found many critics and detractors.

Windows 8.1, released last year, attempted to address those complaints with the revival of core Windows design and usage properties, such as the Start button. Now, with Windows 10, Microsoft is not quite hitting the reset button on touch, but wants to make sure it does not repeat history in its attempt to take Windows forward.

“iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do,” says Apple CEO Tim Cook in a statement.

“Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can’t wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday.”

The demand for the new iPhones is exceeding the initial pre-order supply according to Apple: “While a significant amount will be delivered to customers beginning on Friday and throughout September, many iPhone pre-orders are scheduled to be delivered in October.”

Apple announces the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch

Apple on Tuesday announced the next generation of iPhones, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch phablet sized iPhone 6 Plus alongside its first wearable, the Apple Watch at an event in Carliforia.

Apple has strayed from is usual 4-inch display sized by unveiling the iPhone 6 with 4.7-inch display and the iPhone 6 Plus with a phablet sized display, 5.5-inches to be precise. Both device has a rounded edge embodied in an anodized unibody aluminium frame and are the thinnest devices ever made by Apple – 6.9mm for the iPhone 6 and 7.1mm for the iPhone 6 Plus.

The iPhone 6 sports a 1334 x 750 pixels resolution display with a pixel density of 326ppi while the iPhone 6 Plus sports a 1920 x 1080 pixels Full HD display with a pixel density of 401ppi. The former’s display is branded ‘Retina HD’ and both display feature ion-strengthened cover glass. Both devices are powered by Apple’s new A8 chipset, which is said to be 25 percent faster and 50 percent faster Graphics than the A7 chipset. The processor works in collaboration with M8 motion processor and the phone’s sensor options to track data.

Both devices rock an 8MP iSight cameras with f/2.2 aperture and a new Focus pixels technology that enables faster autofocus. The device’s camera also has a host of other camera features including image stabilisation and more. Both devices run on iOS 8 and includes Apple’s new payment system called the Apple Pay. Apple Pay used NFC and TouchID to make secure and onetouch payments online (starting from the US).

Connectivity options including the NFC includes 4G LTE Cat.4, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, VoLTE (Voice over LTE), Wi-Fi Calling. The devices come in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB storage options.

For each storage option on contract, the iPhone 6 available for $199, $299 and $399 while the iPhone 6 Plus is available for $299, $399 and $499 on contract. For the Unlocked version, the iPhone 6 is available for $649 (16GB), $749 (64GB) and $849 (128GB) while the iPhone 6 Plus is available for $749, $849 and $949 respectively.

Pre-ordering for the device starts on Friday, September 12 and Shipping starts on September 19, starting from the US and would be available in other countries too.

Apple Watch
The First Wearable from the Cupertino Giant has been named the Apple Watch and would be available in Early 2015 at a starting price of $349.

The Apple Watch is available in three editions – the regular Apple Watch, the Apple Watch Edition and the Apple Watch Sport. The Apple Watch has to be paired with iPhone 6 to be able to function properly and coming october the iPhone 5, 5S and 5C would also be compatible with the smartwatch.

The Watch apart from sending & receiving messages, receiving notifications, fitness and health monitoring, features Siri, tells time and runs outside apps.

Bill Gates support to tackle ebola in africa

More money has been announced to help the emergency response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

The Gates Foundation - set up by the Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda - is committing $50m to help step up efforts to tackle the deadly virus in the affected countries.

This comes on top of other funds announced by the UK and US governments, as well as the European Union. But some aid charities say that the most urgent need in Africa is for expert teams in bio-hazard containment.

Ebola Scare At OAU As Suspected Female Student Moved To Lagos For Screening

The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife have said one of its female student is suspected to be a secondary contact of Ebola.

This was contained in a statement by the Public Relations of the university, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju late on Tuesday. He explained that the suspected student has been evacuated to Lagos for proper attention.

It said,

“A female student of the OAU, Ile-Ife who is suspected to be a secondary contact of the Ebola Virus Disease in Port-Harcourt, presented sick at the University Health Centre.

“After a clinical assessment by the Ebola Surveillance Preparedness and Response Committee of the University, the authorities thereafter contacted the State Ministry of Health, the Federal Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation(WHO).

“The female suspected secondary Ebola contact has since been evacuated to the appropriate facility in Lagos for further investigations to confirm her status.”

While emphasising that the student illness was not a confirmed Ebola case, Olarewaju said appropriate preventive and protective measures have been taken.

He added, “In the meantime, the National team and the World Health Organisation team on Ebola Control have promptly decontaminated the University Health Centre despite the fact that the case is yet to be confirmed.

“The University authorities wish to emphasise the fact that the case is not a confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease and therefore request all members of the University Community to remain calm as the situation is fully under control
